What should a research paper abstract include?

Most empirical abstracts answer five questions, in order: why the work was done and which gap it addresses, what it set out to do, how it was done and on what data or with whom, what was found with the numbers the design produces, and what the finding means. Editors who skim an abstract at triage look for those five answers in roughly that sequence.

Journals that require structured abstracts turn the questions into headings such as Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Unstructured abstracts carry the same jobs without labels, which is why the sentence that states the gap is the easiest one to leave out when the writer already knows it.

The checker looks for phrase-level evidence of each job. A sentence that opens with a contrast word and names what previous work has not done reads as a gap; a sentence that says what was measured and in whom reads as methods and data. A job can be done in wording the lists do not contain, so a missing phrase is a prompt to reread rather than a fault.

Do all abstracts use the same structure?

No. Medicine and psychology often mandate Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions headings, and clinical journals add lines such as Design or Setting. Computer science and engineering favor a problem, approach, and evaluation shape with no headings at all.

Theoretical, humanities, and review articles may have no methods or results sentence, and qualitative studies report themes rather than effect sizes. A checker built on the empirical pattern will always find fewer signals in those abstracts.

For that reason the results treat background, data, and quantitative evidence as optional, and any component can be reported as not applicable. A missing signal in a field that does not use that component is expected rather than a fault.

Should an abstract include numerical results?

For quantitative studies, yes. A 1999 audit published in JAMA compared abstracts with the papers they summarized at six major medical journals and found that between 18 and 68 percent of abstracts, depending on the journal, contained data that were inconsistent with or absent from the body of the paper. Reviewers who know that study check the numbers first.

CONSORT for abstracts asks trial reports to state the primary outcome in the abstract with an effect estimate and its confidence interval. Conceptual and qualitative work reports differently, so the quantitative signal is optional for them, and journals differ on how many statistics they allow in the abstract.

How long should a research abstract be?

The journal decides. Science allows about 125 words, Nature asks for a summary paragraph of about 200, and PLOS ONE accepts up to 300. A limit of 150 to 300 words covers most venues, and some submission systems count the words and block anything over the cap.

What this checker cannot evaluate

Phrase matching has hard limits. The checker cannot tell you any of the following.

  • Whether the claims are scientifically valid
  • Whether the contribution is novel
  • Whether the statistics are correct or appropriate for the design
  • Whether the sentences cohere into an argument
  • Whether the paper fits the journal's scope
  • Whether the paper is accepted, or how likely that is

A detected signal means a phrase matched. A missing signal means no phrase matched. Both are prompts to reread the sentence, and neither is a judgment about the abstract or the research behind it.
