How to choose the right journal for your paper

In a 2022 paper in Parasites & Vectors, Dantas-Torres listed the top reasons manuscripts get rejected with no review, and most of them had nothing to do with the science.

The paper sat outside the journal’s scope. The work wasn’t novel enough for that journal’s readers (Dantas-Torres, 2022). A scientist can spend two years on a study and lose it in this filter in under a week.

The filter isn’t random, and it isn’t cruel. Editors screen submissions against what their journal actually prints, because that’s the job. The choice of journal is part of the paper’s argument, then, decided before a single reviewer sees it. And the choice responds to evidence, because a journal shows what it wants in the scope statement, the recent issues, the published review times, and the fee schedule, and all four are public.

What does the right journal look like?

It looks like the place your paper already belongs. Two properties carry almost all of the weight: what the journal publishes, and who reads it. A journal that prints studies like yours, for readers who need exactly your result, will usually read the manuscript as a contribution. A journal outside that pair reads the same manuscript as a poor fit, no matter how strong the findings are.

Most shortlists get built on prestige instead. The lab names the three famous journals in the field, and the paper goes to the top one first, because that’s what everyone does. In the submissions we see, that habit most often has the same ending: a fast, polite rejection citing scope, then a resubmission three months later to a journal that was the right home all along. The detour costs a quarter and buys nothing.

A shortlist built on evidence looks different before any paper is sent anywhere:

The table runs in a specific order on purpose. Scope kills more papers than anything else, so it comes first, and the sections below follow the same order.

How do you match your paper to a journal’s scope?

The match comes from comparing two short texts, the journal’s scope statement and your abstract. The procedure as we run it takes about an hour and needs nothing but a browser.

1. The scope statement, read literally

Every journal publishes a page saying what it takes. Most authors skim it for a general vibe.

The categories that reward a literal read are explicit, meaning the subjects named, the study types listed, and any “we do not publish” sentences, which are the most honest text on the page. A scope statement that never mentions your study type is a real answer. It stays a real answer even when the journal’s name feels adjacent to your topic, and scope pages also name the contribution level expected, a methods note or a full study, where the quietest mismatches often hide.

2. The last two tables of contents

A scope statement is a promise. The table of contents is the record. The two issues closest to today show what the editors selected under real constraints, with real competition for space. The count that matters is the papers resembling yours in subject and in kind. Two or more in the last two issues is a strong signal. Zero is a complete answer, and it overrides whatever the scope page implies.

3. The abstract overlap count

The last step compares word use, and it’s the one that runs quickest. The setup is two windows, the abstract beside the scope statement, with every shared term marked, from the field’s name for the phenomenon to the method family and the population or system studied. A paper sharing five or six load-bearing terms with the scope statement reads, at a glance, like it belongs. A paper sharing one, with everything else translated from a neighboring field, can read as foreign before a reviewer reaches the results. Part of this check can be automated. Fukuro, the review tool behind this blog, reads an abstract against a target journal’s scope language and flags the phrases no editor there will recognize. It’s a check, not a crystal ball. It can’t predict an editor’s taste, and it doesn’t replace a colleague who knows the field.

Does the impact factor matter?

As a number, it measures the journal, not the paper.

The impact factor is the average number of citations, in a year, to the items a journal published in the previous two years, and Clarivate computes it in the Journal Citation Reports. A high score means the journal’s average article gets cited a lot. Your paper, once published, contributes one data point to that average, in either direction. It is weak as a selection tool for two reasons, because it’s a journal-level average hiding enormous spread, and because citations take years to arrive while career decisions don’t wait.

The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment, signed by more than 27,000 individuals and organizations in 175 countries, asks for exactly this reason that the factor not be used to judge individual papers. The indexing question runs the same way. Web of Science carries the impact factor, Scopus tends to cover more titles, and neither listing says whether the journal’s readers are yours.

Why the factor still anchors so many shortlists, we don’t fully know. Our guess is that it’s the only number printed next to the journal’s name, and a number feels like evidence.

For a first paper, we would take a mid-tier journal whose editors actually read the manuscript over a famous one that returns it in nine days. The famous rejection earns nothing. The mid-tier publication earns a cited paper.

Open access or subscription: which model?

The model decides who can read the result and who pays for it.

The two systems split those bills in opposite ways, and the differences land on the author as money and as reach.

The honest summary is that open access trades the reader’s paywall for the author’s invoice. Whether that trade is worth it depends on who needs to read the work and what the funder requires, since Plan S signatories increasingly mandate open access. Many journals waive their fee for authors without funding. The fees are real money and they vary enormously, so the APC page belongs on the shortlist table next to the review times.

Can a journal finder tool make the shortlist for you?

Partly, and the part it does is the easy part.

Elsevier’s Journal Finder and Springer’s Journal Suggester match an abstract or keyword list against their publishers’ catalogs and return journals that publish similar text. Schuemie and Kors built JANE in 2008 for the biomedical side of the problem, and it matches abstracts against PubMed.

What comes back is a similarity ranking. The tool has read nothing and judged nothing. It can’t tell a rigorous journal from a careless one, and it only knows its own corner of publishing, since Elsevier’s tool suggests Elsevier journals. The match is confident. Confidence is free.

So the tools can serve as a starting sweep, useful for surfacing five candidates nobody in the lab thought of, and the scope and contents checks from earlier still decide among them.

How do you avoid predatory journals?

A predatory journal takes the author’s fee and provides little or no review in return, and its business model often works on authors who need a publication fast. The guard is a set of questions with the checklists already written. Think. Check. Submit. walks authors through recognizing the journal, checking its editorial board, and verifying that its peer review is real.

A journal indexed in DOAJ has passed a quality review for open access titles, which is why the DOAJ mark appears in the cost row of the table above.

The warning signs concentrate in the solicitation, flattering emails that invite a submission within days alongside promises of publication in a week. A journal that needs the author more than the author needs the journal shows it in a turnaround too fast to be true.

How much should review speed matter?

Enough to know the number, not enough to let it pick the journal.

Time to first decision ranges from a few weeks at fast journals to more than six months at selective ones, and the whole distribution, with what controls each stage, is in our timeline piece. PLOS ONE, for instance, reported a median of 74 days to first decision in 2023. The number matters most under a deadline, when a thesis or a grant depends on the paper existing, and then a journal with a published median under two months is the rational first stop, even at some cost in prestige. With no deadline, the scope and audience checks should win, because a paper in the right place will usually collect the readers it was written for.

What does a finished decision look like?

The shortlist, done, is four or five journals with every cell filled, from scope evidence through contents evidence, audience, median time to first decision, and the fee. The ranking puts the best fit first rather than the biggest name. The top choice is where the paper goes, and the second choice is where it goes if the first says no, which settles the resubmission question while it’s still painless.

None of this guarantees anything. Editors make judgment calls, and the same paper can find different homes for reasons no procedure reaches. What the procedure changes is simpler. The paper stops dying in the one filter it never had to face, and starts its real review in front of the readers it was written for.
