Award-winning authors at the Academy of Management Journal rewrite their introductions about ten times. Adam Grant and Timothy Pollock, then editors at the journal, asked 22 award-winning authors and 20 outstanding reviewers what a strong introduction needs to do. Three questions appeared repeatedly: Who cares? What is still unknown? What will we learn?
The last question points to the research contribution. New researchers often explain the topic and the research gap but struggle to state what their study adds. A paper may examine sleep and exam scores and note that few studies measured sleep across a full week. Yet its contribution statement may still say:
This paper contributes to the literature on student sleep.
The sentence identifies the research area, but it does not explain what the study adds. A useful contribution statement answers a more specific question:
What does this study add to what we already know?
The answer needs to be clear enough for a reader to understand and specific enough for the paper to support with evidence.

What is a research contribution?
A research contribution explains what a study adds to existing research. This contribution may provide additional evidence, improve an explanation, test an existing claim under different conditions, or introduce a method that changes how a problem can be studied.
Brett Mensh and Konrad Kording make a related point in Ten simple rules for structuring papers. They argue that a paper needs a central message that readers can remember. If a reader can describe the topic but cannot explain what the paper added, the contribution is unclear.
A research gap and a research contribution connect, but they are not identical. The gap indicates what previous research has not addressed. The contribution tells the reader what the new study teaches by addressing that gap.
Suppose earlier studies measured sleep on the night before an exam, but few examined average sleep across the full week. That is the research gap. If a new study finds that the relationship between short sleep and lower exam scores remains when sleep is measured across the week, the study now adds evidence that the relationship may not be limited to the night before the exam.
The paper has moved from explaining what was missing to explaining what was learned.
How is a contribution different from a topic or a finding?
A topic, finding, research contribution, and authors’ credit statement have different purposes, even though they may appear close together in a paper.
The reader learns what was studied from the topic. A finding reports what the analysis showed. A research contribution explains what that finding adds to previous knowledge. An author-credit statement identifies who completed different parts of the work.
The same study can contain all four:

CRediT defines 14 contributor roles that journals can use to report who performed different parts of a research project. Those roles describe authorship, not the scientific contribution of the paper.
The difference between a finding and a contribution is important. Consider this sentence:
Students who slept less scored eight points lower.
This is a finding because it reports what the data showed. Now compare it with:
Earlier studies linked short sleep on the night before an exam with lower scores. This study finds a similar decrease when sleep is averaged across the week, suggesting that the association extends beyond the night before the exam.
The second version places the finding in relation to previous research. It tells the reader not just what happened in the data, but what the result adds to what was already known.
Where does the contribution appear in a paper?
The major contribution usually appears in the abstract and near the end of the introduction because these are the places where readers expect to understand what the study adds.
The abstract gives the shorter version. It needs to tell the reader what problem was studied, what was done, what was found, and why the results matter. Nature, for example, asks authors to state the major result clearly in its guidance on summary paragraphs. Our post on how to write a research paper abstract explains this structure in more detail.
The introduction gives more space to establish the contribution. John Swales’s CARS model describes a common sequence: establish the research area, identify a gap or problem, and explain how the present study addresses it. We discuss this structure in our post on research paper introductions.
Some journals ask authors to state their contributions in additional formats. Elsevier, for example, requests three to five Highlights. Computer science papers often include a contribution list near the end of the introduction.
Whether the contribution appears as a paragraph, sentence, or bullet list, each claim needs to describe something the paper actually demonstrates. Collecting data, training a model, or running an experiment is not automatically a contribution.
The conclusion returns to the contribution after the evidence has been presented. The claim in the conclusion should remain consistent with the one introduced earlier. If the conclusion makes a broader claim, the paper may appear to say more than its results support.
How do you write a contribution statement?
Wayne Booth, Gregory Colomb, and Joseph Williams provide a simple framework in The Craft of Research:
- I am studying ____.
- because I want to find out ____.
- To help my reader understand ____.
The first part identifies the topic. The second identifies the research question. The third explains why the answer matters.
Applied to the sleep study, the framework might look like this:
I am studying sleep and exam scores in first-year students because I want to find out whether the decrease in scores reported for short sleep on the night before an exam also appears when sleep is averaged across the week, to understand whether the pattern is limited to the night before the exam or extends across several days.
Before the study is finished, this statement describes what the researcher wants to learn. After the results are available, it can be rewritten as a contribution:
Earlier studies linked short sleep on the night before an exam with lower scores. When sleep is averaged across the week, this study finds a similar eight-point decrease, suggesting that the association is not limited to the night before the test.
This contribution works because it connects three pieces of information: what earlier research found, what the new study examined, and what the additional evidence adds.
Karen Locke and Karen Golden-Biddle found a similar pattern when they examined published papers in organization studies. Authors first explain what previous research has established, then identify what remains unresolved, and finally state how their study addresses the problem. Without the earlier research, readers cannot see what is new. Without the last contribution, readers know a gap exists but do not know what the study teaches.
David Whetten makes a related point when discussing theoretical contributions. Adding another variable does not automatically create a contribution. Consider:
We also measured caffeine use.
This tells the reader what the researchers did. It does not tell the reader what they learned.
Compare it with:
After controlling for caffeine use, the relationship between sleep and exam scores remains, suggesting that caffeine use does not explain the observed association.
The second version explains what the additional analysis adds. The research step itself is not the contribution; the new understanding that comes from it may be.
What can count as a research contribution?
A contribution does not need to be a completely new theory. Studies can add useful knowledge in several ways.
New evidence
A study can provide evidence that previous research did not have. Suppose earlier studies measured sleep on the night before an exam, while a new study measures sleep across seven days.
Collecting seven days of data is a methodological choice. The contribution comes from what the data show. If the relationship between short sleep and lower scores remains across the full week, the study adds evidence that the relationship is not limited to one night.
A different population or setting
A study can test whether an existing finding appears in a population or setting that earlier studies did not examine.
Suppose previous research reported a relationship between sleep and performance among working adults. A new study tests the same relationship among first-year university students.
A contribution could then be stated as:
The sleep-score association previously reported among working adults was also observed in this sample of first-year students under the evaluated conditions.
The wording stays close to the evidence. A study of one group of students cannot establish that the same pattern applies to every student or university.
A new or improved method
A new algorithm, measurement approach, survey item, or experimental protocol can be a research contribution when the paper shows what it improves or makes possible.
For instance, proposing a new algorithm is not enough by itself. The study needs to show what problem the algorithm addresses and how its performance differs from existing approaches.
Using an established method in the usual way normally belongs in the methodology rather than in the contribution statement.
A better explanation
A study can contribute by altering how people understand an existing result.
Suppose previous studies found that students who sleep less receive lower exam scores. A new study tests whether caffeine use explains that relationship. If the association remains after caffeine is considered, the study has ruled out one explanation under the tested conditions.
The contribution is not that caffeine was measured. It is what the analysis reveals about the relationship between sleep and exam scores.
What makes a contribution statement weak?
Several problems appear repeatedly in contribution statements.
It names the field instead of the contribution
This paper contributes to research on sleep and learning.
The sentence identifies the research area but says nothing about what the paper adds.
A simple test is to replace the topic with another one. If the sentence would still work for many studies, it is probably too general.
It relies on being “the first”
This is the first study of weekly sleep and exam scores in first-year students at this university.
The statement may be correct, but being first does not explain why the study matters. The reader still needs to know what studying weekly sleep allows researchers to understand that previous work did not.
Novelty tells the reader that something has not been done before. Contribution tells the reader what was learned by doing it.
The contribution changes across the paper
A paper can become difficult to follow when the abstract, introduction, and conclusion describe the contribution differently.
The abstract may discuss weekly sleep, the introduction may focus on cramming, and the conclusion may make a broader claim about student well-being. The reader is then left with several versions of what the paper is about.
Tools such as Fukurō can help identify changes in claims across sections, but the author still needs to decide which claim the evidence supports.
The claim is too broad for the data
Consider a study of 60 students from one course. Its results cannot justify a statement such as:
Universities should change their exam schedules.
The study did not test universities, different exam schedules, or what would happen if those schedules changed.
A claim closer to the evidence would be:
In this course, students with shorter weekly sleep had lower exam scores, supporting further study of sleep measured across several days.
The scope of the claim needs to match the scope of the evidence.
It lists research steps
We collected 80 surveys, performed a t-test, and discussed the results.
These are research activities. They tell the reader how the study was conducted but not what it added.
A contribution statement needs to explain what was learned, established, improved, or made possible through those activities.
How do you check your contribution before submitting?
Start by reading the abstract and the last paragraph of the introduction without looking at the rest of the paper. Then complete this sentence:
This paper adds ____.
If the answer is just the research topic, the contribution is still missing. If the answer is a finding, but you cannot explain how it relates to previous research, that connection needs to be clearer. If the abstract and introduction lead to different answers, the paper is making inconsistent claims.
Next, check whether the evidence supports the contribution. Find the result, table, figure, analysis, or method evaluation that supports the claim and ask:
Does this evidence actually support what I am claiming?
If it does not, the claim needs to be narrower or the study needs stronger evidence. A contribution statement should describe what the paper demonstrates, not what the researchers hoped to demonstrate before conducting the study.
The University of Saskatchewan writing guide on establishing a project’s value recommends explaining why the research matters to someone who does not already care about the topic. This can expose missing reasoning. If the listener keeps asking “Why does that matter?”, the contribution may still need more explanation.
Writing a contribution statement early can define what the study is trying to establish, but the statement needs to be revised after the results are known. The final version should reflect what the study actually found.
Before submitting, ask one last question:
After reading this paper, what can the reader now know, understand, or do that was not clear before?
If the paper answers that question clearly and the evidence supports the answer, the contribution is clear.
