You finish the introduction of a paper on nighttime smartphone use and sleep among university students. Four studies sit in the opening paragraphs, each linking evening screen time with poorer rest. Then a heading titled Literature Review appears, and those same four papers are still in the notes, waiting to be compared by how they measured use and how they measured sleep. The question shows up in thesis chapters as often as it does in short journal articles.
They often belong in both places. An introduction borrows previous research to show why this study has to exist. A literature review stays with that research long enough to show what the field already knows and where the evidence still splits. The same paper can perform both jobs. The sentence around the citation is what changes.
USC Graduate Writing Support puts the split this way: in an introduction you are writing about the topic; in a literature review you are writing about people writing about the topic.

How do an introduction and a literature review differ?
They differ in the job previous research is asked to do. The introduction selects studies that establish context and motivate the present paper. The literature review compares studies related to the problem, including the methods researchers have used and the questions that remain unanswered. Those comparisons are the synthesis, including where findings conflict and where existing designs cannot yet answer the question. The heading is optional: some journal articles discuss relevant studies inside the introduction, while others use a separate literature review or related work section. USC’s guide treats that choice as a function of the field and the journal, along with the type of document being written.

What does an introduction do?
Take the paragraph that has to get a reader from a phone left beside the bed to a reason this particular study exists. That is the introduction’s job: give readers what they need to understand the research problem and why the work is necessary. It often begins with a broader area, narrows to a specific problem, explains what remains unresolved, and then presents the study.
John Swales described this progression in the Create a Research Space, or CARS, model. Research introductions typically establish a research area and identify a gap or unanswered question. They then explain how the study addresses it. Writing centers still teach the sequence; the UMass Amherst CARS guide is the version most often handed to students. A hypothetical study on nighttime smartphone notifications and sleep among university students might open this way:
Smartphones are frequently kept close to the bed, making notifications a source of sleep interruption. Previous research has examined relationships between nighttime smartphone use and sleep, but notification interruptions have received less attention than overall screen use. This study examines whether nighttime notification frequency is associated with sleep quality among university students.
The paragraph moves from the broader topic to an unresolved question and then to the study, and previous research appears because it helps explain why the work is needed. Selected citations are enough. Nature’s guidance for summary paragraphs asks for the same narrowing in the abstract, from context to the unresolved issue and then to the result. The introduction has more space, but the demand is the same. A useful question is whether the reader needs this citation now to understand why the study is being conducted. If the answer is no, the comparison may belong in the literature review.
What does a literature review do?
George Mason University’s Writing Center describes a literature review as a map of the field, or a sense of the scholarly conversation on a topic. It does more than report individual findings: it shows how studies relate to one another and what they reveal when considered together. Using the same smartphone example, a literature review might compare how studies define nighttime use. Some measure total screen time, while others focus on messaging, social media, notifications, or whether the phone remains close to the bed. The review can then compare how sleep is measured: questionnaires in some papers, wearable devices or laboratory recordings in others. Those differences can help explain why studies reach different conclusions.
The UNC Writing Center treats that work as synthesis: a reorganization of what the sources say. A paper-by-paper recap leaves the relationships for the reader to reconstruct. A review may also evaluate methods or trace a debate, and some reviews advise the reader on which evidence is most pertinent to the present question. Monash University’s literature review guidance adds that a good review classifies the research and identifies gaps. The product is an account of the field’s current state of thinking, including what is generally accepted and what is still emerging.
Can the same studies appear in both sections?
Yes. The introduction and the literature review may cite some of the same research. What changes is the reason for discussing it.
Suppose several studies report associations between nighttime smartphone use and poor sleep, but few isolate the role of notifications. The introduction might say:
Previous studies have linked nighttime smartphone use with sleep outcomes, but the role of notification interruptions remains unclear.
That sentence establishes the problem. A literature review might examine the same evidence more closely:
Studies of nighttime smartphone use differ in how they define exposure. Some measure total screen time, others rely on self-reported bedtime use, and fewer examine interruptions such as notifications. These differences make it difficult to determine whether notifications affect sleep independently of general smartphone use.
Those sentences in the introduction lead toward the study. The longer treatment in the review explains what is known and why uncertainty remains. Brett Mensh and Konrad Kording, in their rules for structuring papers, argue that a paper needs a central message a reader can remember. If the introduction and the review cite the same papers but leave the reader unsure whether those papers are motivation or evidence, the message has split.
Where does the research gap belong?
A research gap can appear in both sections. In the literature review, the writer can show why the gap exists:
Most studies measure general nighttime smartphone use rather than notification frequency.
The introduction can then state the problem more directly:
It remains unclear whether nighttime notifications are associated with sleep independently of general smartphone use.
The literature review builds the evidence for the gap. The introduction uses the gap to justify the study. In shorter journal articles, both functions may appear in the introduction, which is the pattern USC documents in papers that never use a Literature Review heading.
Writers sometimes treat a gap as anything that has not been studied. Suppose no previous paper has examined smartphone notifications among students from one university. That absence alone leaves the importance of the unknown unstated. The writer still needs to explain why studying that population could test or extend existing knowledge. The same problem appears in statements such as “Few studies have examined X.” The sentence reports that something is uncommon, without saying why the missing evidence matters.
A useful research gap identifies an unresolved problem, not simply an unstudied topic. Compare:
Few studies have separated notification frequency from overall smartphone use, making it difficult to determine whether interruptions contribute to sleep problems independently of total screen exposure.

How do you tell a literature review from a list of studies?
The most common error, according to GMU’s literature review guide, is to structure the section as a sequence of summaries: one source, then the next, then the next. Each sentence may be accurate. The relationship among the studies stays with the writer.
A weak version of the smartphone review might say:
Smith studied nighttime smartphone use and sleep. Jones examined screen time among university students. Chen investigated notifications. Garcia used wearable sleep measurements.
A stronger version might say:
Research on nighttime smartphone use has followed two approaches. Some studies measure overall device use before sleep, while others examine specific activities such as messaging or notifications. Differences in how smartphone use and sleep are measured make direct comparisons difficult.
The second paragraph gives the reader a way to see the relationship among the studies, which is the synthesis the review is for. GMU’s companion guide on organizing literature reviews recommends a concrete rewrite: change each group label from a noun phrase (“notification studies”) into an assertion (“studies that isolate notifications cannot yet be compared with studies that measure total screen time, because exposure is defined differently”). The assertion becomes the topic sentence. The citations follow as evidence for that point.
UNC describes organizing a review by theme or by method, with chronology as another option. Monash’s page on structuring a literature review makes the same point: there is no single correct content structure, but the body has to be organized by a principle the reader can follow. Studies might be grouped by research method, theory, population, major finding, agreement or disagreement, historical development, or recurring limitation. The grouping is what turns a bibliography into an argument.
A simple test: print the draft and cover the author names. If the remaining sentences still make a claim about the field (“two measurement approaches,” “conflicting results in student samples”), the paragraph is synthesizing. If they collapse into “someone found something,” the paragraph is still a list.
Do you always need a separate literature review?
No. A literature review sitting between the introduction and the methods is common in some fields and absent in others.
Luciana Sollaci and Maurício Pereira tracked original articles in four major medical journals from 1935 to 1985, and by the 1980s the introduction, methods, results, and discussion (IMRAD) pattern was the only structure those journals used for original papers. IMRAD has no Literature Review heading. Previous research is discussed in the introduction, then revisited in the discussion when the new results are interpreted. Computer science articles often take a different cut and place a Related Work section after the opening. A thesis or dissertation, with more space, may devote a chapter to the review. Monash notes that in graduate research the review’s job is to identify gaps and argue for further work, which is a larger task than a journal introduction can usually carry.
Match the venue. Recently published papers in the target journal are a better guide than a generic template, and a thesis follows the institution and the discipline. The structure matters less than whether readers can understand the problem and how the study relates to previous work. A paper with a separate literature review can move detailed comparisons there and keep the introduction short, while a paper without one still has to cover the same material, only more briefly, before the methods begin. Either way, the introduction comes first. If the document has a separate review, that section normally follows.
How can you tell which section a paragraph belongs in?
Ask what the paragraph is doing, rather than how many citations it contains or what the heading says.
A paragraph has an introductory function if it mainly explains the research problem, why the problem matters, what remains uncertain, what the study investigates, or what it aims to contribute. A paragraph has a literature review function if it mainly compares previous studies, groups research into themes, examines conflicting findings, evaluates methods, traces the development of an idea, or identifies patterns and limitations.
Run this on a draft:
- Label each paragraph

fieldparagraphs sit inside the introduction and never return to the gap or the claim, they are a compressed literature review. Move the detailed comparison, or cut it until the introduction can narrow again. - If a

If the answer is no, the detail belongs with the review of the field.
Dedicated academic tools, Fukuro among them, can flag an introduction whose citations never thin out. They cannot decide which job a paragraph is performing. That still requires reading for function.
If you are unsure where a paragraph belongs, ask whether it is helping you establish the study or helping you explain the existing research. A paragraph that fits neither label is usually doing a third job, such as previewing methods or listing papers, and still needs a home.
